This is the alternate set-up with 3 lights as we moved things around a bit. If I remember correctly, this was the
open reflector as the main light and the 2 softboxes as separation lights and no light on the background. You
can see the effect of the separation light (in this case edge lights) in the highlights that outline her arms.
Distance and placement angle of the separation lights will change the effect. Gridded softboxes, strip lights and
open reflectors are also often used in this set up to create dramatic separation light effects. You'll see it a lot in
rap music performer shots with a gritty feel. It can be used effectively in glamor as well--sometimes with the
help of body oil for a really shiny effect.
